The union government has made available 20.02 lakh tons of sugar for April 2010, or nearly 1.5 lakh tons lower than the quantity released in April last year.

However, the centre said yesterday that the quantity would be adequate to meet the internal demand for sugar.

The levy sugar quota, for distribution through the public distribution system at cheaper rates, has been increased to 2.02 lakh tons from 1.91 lakh tons in the same month last year.

The non-levy quota meant for sale in the open market for the next month has been fixed at 1.8 million tons, which is down from 1.95 million tons during April last year.

The 1.8 million tons, would include 2 lakh tons of sugar carried forward from March quota as the quantity could not be sold.

While 1 lakh tons would be imported refined sugar, 2.2 lakh tons of processed sugar from imported raw sugar would be made available for sale in the open market.
