Mumbai: The San Diego District Court in the US has ruled that software giant Microsoft Corporation and PC maker Dell Inc must pay damages to  French-American telecom company Alcatel-Lucent for infringing on patents.

District judge Marilyn L. Huff ordered Microsoft and Dell to pay $511.6 million and $70,0000, respectively, in damages, including prejudgment interest, to Paris-based Alcatel-Lucenet for patent violations.

A jury had, in April, ordered Microsoft to pay Alcatel-Lucent $357.7 million for infringing on a patented software programme that is used to select a calendar date from a menu in certain programmes, including Microsoft Outlook and Windows Mobile.

Microsoft was also ordered to pay $10.4 million for infringing on an Alcatel-Lucent patent related to the use of a stylus on a tablet computer.

The district judge denied Microsoft's request for reconsideration of that decisions and instead raised the amount of damages due to Alcatel-Lucent to include a prejudgment interest as well.

The judge also upheld the jury's decision that Microsoft's video encoding technology doesn't infringe on a third Alcatel- Lucent patent.
