Coal India Ltd (CIL) has supplied 312.02 million tonnes of coal to units in the power generation sector in the 2011-12 financial year, about 95 per cent of the target of 328.21 million tones.

The figure is also 2.95 per cent higher compared to the 304.145 million tonnes of coal CIL supplied to power sector utilities in the previous financial year, minister of state for coal Pratik Prakashbapu Patil informed the Rajya Sabha in reply to a question.

Actual production by CIL in 2011-12 was 435.84 million tonnes as against the revised target of 447.00 million tones, which is 97.5 per cent of the target, the minister said.

He attributed the shortfall in coal production to incessant rains in the first quarter and the second quarter of the year, delay in forestry and environmental clearances, law and order problems, particularly in CCL (Jharkhand) and MCL (Orissa) and problems associated with land acquisition and coal evacuation in some of the growing coalfields like CCL, MCL and SECL.

He said CIL has been undertaking mechanisation and modernisation of mines in order to boost coal production.

Coal production from ongoing projects is programmed to increase from 227.50 million tonnes in 2011-12 to 333.33 million tonnes in 2016-17.
