Core sector industrial production in India decreased by 1.8 per cent year-on-year in August as production in a majority of the eight core industries, except for steel and fertilizers, showed a declining trend.

The eight core sector industries comprising cement, coal, crude oil, electricity, fertilizers, natural gas, refinery products and steel, having a combined weight of 40.27 per cent in the general Index of Industrial Production (IIP) recorded a growth rate of 4.6 per cent during April-August 2024-25.

The final growth rate of core sector industriasl production stood at 6.9 per cent in May 2024.

Coal production, having a weight of 10.33 per cent in IIP, declined by 8.1 per cent in August 2024 while cumulative coal production increased by 6.5 per cent year-on-year during April-August 2024-25.

Production of crude oil (weight of 8.98 per cent in IIP) declined by 3.4 per cent in August 2024 while cumulative production of crude oil declined by 1.7 per cent during April-August 2024-25.

Production of natural gas (weight of 6.88 per cent in IIP) declined by 3.6 per cent in August 2024 while its cumulative production increased by 2.6 per cent during April-August 2024-25.

Petroleum refinery production (weight of 28.04 per cent in IIP) declined by 1.0 per cent in August 2024 while its cumulative refinery production increased by 1.7 per cent during April-August 2024-25.

Fertiliser production (weight of 2.63 per cent in IIP) increased by 3.2 per cent in August 2024 while cumulative production of fertilisers increased by 1.7 per cent during April-August 2024-25.

Steel production (weight of 17.92 per cent in IIP) increased by 4.5 per cent in August 2024 while cumulative steel production increased by 7.3 per cent during April-August 2024-25.

Cement production (weight of 5.37 per cent in IIP) declined by 3.0 per cent in August 2024 while cumulative cement production increased by 0.7 per cent during April-August 2024-25.

Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent in IIP) declined by 5.0 per cent in August 2024 while cumulative electricity generation increased by 6.8 per cent during April-August 2024-25.
