Chinese media fulminates as G-4 asks for quick UNSC reforms

Beijing: The People's Republic of China continues to dig in its heels over reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the apex chamber of the United Nations, probably apprehensive about having two Asian powerhouses, India and Japan, undermining its status as the sole Asian representative in the Security Council.
Four nations, informally dubbed the G-4, India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, made a call a few days ago for quick reforms of the UN Security Council.
State-run Chinese media are now mouthing platitudes about hasty attempts to rush through "premature plans" harming the process and undermining the world body's unity.
"The G4 alleged in their joint statement that their proposal for enlarging the Council is widely supported by UN member nations, but did not indicate how many or which countries have sided with them," China Daily said in an editorial titled 'UN reform will take time'.
Given the massive percentage of votes collected by India in its bid to become a non-permanent member of the UNSC, for the period 2011-2013, it should surprise no one if a huge percentage of the world body voted in favour of implementing immediate reforms in the Council.
India and Germany received impressive support from members of the UN General Assembly in their bid for seats at the Security Council last year, and in India's case it was a near- unanimous vote with just three nations voting against.
