Ministry of defence sets up the Defence Acquisition Council

New Delhi: India's ministry of defence (MoD) has set up the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), which will function as a body under the supervision of the defence minister. An overarching structure, the council has been constituted to provide overall guidance to the country's defence procurement programme.

The stated objective of the DAC is to ensure expeditious procurement of the requirements of the armed forces in a prescribed time frame. Its functions include:

in principle approval of 15 Years Long Terms Integrated Perspective Plan for Defence Forces
accord of Acceptance of Necessity to acquisition proposals
categorisation of the acquisition proposals relating to 'Buy', 'Buy & Make' and 'Make'
issues relating to single vendor clearance
decision regarding 'offset' provisions in respect of acquisition proposals above Rs300 crore
decisions regarding Transfer of Technology under 'Buy & Make' category of acquisition proposals; and
Field Trial evaluation.
