NTPC to get into nuclear power generation

Chennai: Apart from getting into gas and hydro power generation the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) will now enter the nuclear power sector during the 12th Plan period.

According to P M Sayeed, union minister of power, NTPC envisages generating 2,000mw of atomic power generation. For the current 10th Plan (2002-07) NTPC is targeting 9,160mw capacity addition. This will be hiked to 17,000mw during the 11th Plan period (2007-12).

NTPC is the sixth largest thermal power producer in the world and the second most efficient in terms of capacity utilisation.

For the year ended March 31, 2005, NTPC had a sales income (net of electricity duty) of Rs23,516.1 crore.
