NTPC plans Rs 6,600cr coal-based power project investment at Kanpur

National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC), India's largest power producer plans to invest around Rs6,600 crore for setting up a coal-based power project at Kanpur.

The proposed 1,320 MW coal-based power project is scheduled to start around January 2012 at Bilhaur, near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, sources told PTI.

Environment clearance for the project from the ministry of environment and forests is being awaited by the company.

NTPC signed the memorandum of understanding for the availability of land and water for the project in December, 2010.

Presently, NTPC generates power from coal and gas with an installed capacity of 34,854 MW, NTPC is the largest power generating major in the country.

Total capacity addition in FY11 stood at 2490 MW, widely off the FY11 target of 4150 MW.
