The EU has said it is firm about its plan to force airlines using European air space to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

EU officials have expressed disapproval of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) because it took no concrete action on the issue at its 10-day meeting, which recently ended in Montreal, Canada.

Speaking for the EU at the end of the ICAO meeting, the head of Portugal's civil aviation authority Luis Fonseca de Almeida said, "We strongly believe it would be best if the international community could reach an effective mechanism on tackling aviation emissions."
