The groundwork for the ambitious National Manufacturing Policy (NMP) is to get under way as early as August this year, Anand Sharma, union minister of commerce and industry said at the first meeting of the revamped National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council.

Several business leaders attended the meeting including Ratan Tata, chairman, Tata Group, Venu Srinivasan, chairman and managing director, TVS Motor, Mukul Kasliwal, chairman, S Kumars and various secretaries from the government of India such as the MSME secretary and the finance secretary, RS Gujral.

According to Sharma, though land acquisition for the policy was within the states' jurisdiction much progress had been made and a land bank was almost ready.

"The policy as such is notified. There are some other department's notifications that have to be aligned with the cabinet decision that is happening. I am sure by the end of March (it would happen)," he said.

The council has been set up as an interdisciplinary policy forum for enabling innovative and efficient policy initiatives for the crucial manufacturing sector.

As regards inclusive growth and the creation of a 100 million jobs in 10 years, members agreed on the necessity of a 12-14 per cent manufacturing sector growth, social stability and economic growth.
