The centre has recently released GST compensation of Rs13,806 crore to states for March 2020, as compensation agreed to for implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). This takes the total amount that has been released to states on compensation account for the 2019-20 financial year to Rs1,65,302 crore.
The centre has so far collected only Rs95,444 crore as cess during the year 2019-20. To release the compensation for 2019-20, balance of cess amount collected during 2017-18 and 2018-19 was also utilised. In addition, the centre had transferred Rs33,412 crore from Consolidated Fund of India to the Compensation Fund as part of an exercise to apportion balance of IGST pertaining to 2017-18.
Statewise, Maharashtra received the highest amount of GST compensation of Rs19,233 crore, followed by Karnataka (Rs18,628 crore), Gujarat (Rs14,801 crore), Tamil Nadu (Rs12,305 crore), Punjab (Rs12,187 crore), Uttar Pradesh (RS9,123 crore), Delhi (Rs8,424 crore), Kerala (Rs8,111 crore), Rajasthan (Rs6,710 crore), Haryana (Rs6,617 crore), Madhya Pradesh (Rs6,538 crore), West Bengal (Rs6,200 crore), Bihar (Rs5,464 crore), Odisha (Rs5122 crore), Chattisgarh (Rs4,521 crore), Uttarakhand (RS3,375 crore), J&K (Rs3,281 crore), Andhra Pradesh (Rs3028 crore), Telangana (Rs3,054 crore), Himachal Pradesh (Rs2,477 crore), Jharkhand (Rs2,219 crore), Assam (Rs1,284 crore), Goa (Rs1,093 crore), Puducherry (Rs1,057 crore), Tripura (Rs293 crore) and Meghalaya (Rs157 crore), while states like Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Sikkim received nil amount as GST compensation.
