NLC India Ltd has awarded the contract for setting up a 2,400 MW pit head green field thermal power project at Jharsuguda District in Odisha, to BHEL.

NLC awarded the EPC (Engineering, Project and Construction) contract for setting up the 3x800 MW pit head power project to BHEL following a competitive tenders under ICB route. 

The contract scope includes engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection and commissioning of equipment such as boilers, turbine, generators, balance of plants, FGD and SCR for 3 X800 MW- 2400 MW Stage –I.

The project is based on Ultra Super Critical Technology. The entire power of 2400 MW is tied up with the states of Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Kerala and Puducherry and PPAs with the respective power distribution companies have already been signed.

Coal linkage for the thermal project is available from the 20 million tonne per annum (MTPA) Talabira II and III mines of NLCIL, which is operational from  2020 in Jharsuguda and Sambalpur Districts of Odisha. Water required for the project is linked to Hirakud Reservoir and the power generated will be evacuated through ISTS and STU network.

The project is designed to meet latest pollution regulations using FGD and SCR compliant equipment as per the guidelines prescribed by the ministry of environment and forests. It will use boilers designed to suite the co-firing of biomass as part of the power ministry’s green initiative.

The first unit of the project is scheduled to be commissioned in the 2028-29 financial year. Being a pithead power project, the variable cost will be competitive and NLC hoped to provide low-cost power to customers.

NLC is a Navratna company under the ministry of coal.
