Growth of bank credit, deposits slackened in April-June 2013: RBI

The growth in both bank credit and deposits showed a declining trend in the quarter ended 30 June 2013 compared to levels in the comparable quarter of the previous year, official figures released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed.

Growth of gross bank credit decelerated to 13.2 per cent during the quarter ended June 2013 while aggregate deposits grew 13.5 per cent year-on-year during the quarter.

The growth in aggregate deposits and gross bank credit was lower across all population groups compared with a year ago, according to the RBI release.

The top hundred centres, arranged according to the size of deposits accounted for 68.5 per cent of the aggregate deposits and the top hundred centres arranged according to the size of gross bank credit accounted for 76.9 per cent of gross bank credit.

An estimated 70.3 per cent of the total bank offices with deposits of Rs10 crore or more accounted 98.0 per cent of aggregate deposits and 95.0 per cent of gross bank credit while 49.3 per cent of total bank offices with outstanding gross bank credit of Rs10 crore or more accounted for 80.4 per cent of deposits and 96.0 per cent of gross bank credit, according to RBI data.

Nationalised banks, SBI and its associates, and private sector banks accounted for 52.3 per cent, 22.3 per cent and 18.4 per cent of aggregate deposits, respectively, and for 50.2 per cent, 22.6 per cent and 19.5 per cent of gross bank credit, respectively.

The credit-deposit (C-D) ratio of all scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) as of 28 June 2013 stood at 76.5 per cent.

Foreign banks had the highest C-D ratio of 94.2 per cent, followed by new private sector banks 83.5 per cent and SBI and its associates 77.5 per cent - all higher than the all-India average.

RBI said the quarterly data on deposits and credit of scheduled commercial banks for the June 2013 quarter also includes data on spatial distribution of aggregate deposits and gross bank credit of scheduled commercial banks, including regional rural banks (RRBs).
