Toshiba has said it will buy large liquid crystal display (LCD) panels from Sharp as part of an alliance between the two electronics makers in the LCD business.

In a news release issued on Friday 21 December, Toshiba said it would procure the panels from a ¥380 billion ($3.4 billion) factory being built by Sharp in the Osaka prefecture, while Sharp would source semiconductors from Toshiba for use in its LCD TVs.

The two companies said that the alliance would help them compete amid tough competition.
