Taking inspiration from Google's project that drove a driverless car across the US, scientists from Gujarat have built a driverless car of their own design.

The car was designed by two Sanand-based engineering college professors in 28 days. The car can start, turn and change gears by itself without a driver and respond to commands given to it from a remote location.

The driverless car, which is controlled by an Android app and uses 3G wireless technology for communication, can deliver a top speed of 100 kmph. The five-seater car has a screen displaying the route, and is equipped with six sophisticated night-vision cameras to prevent accidents.

Kaushal Jani, assistant professor at Amiraj College of Engineering, said they used high range cameras and video streaming available to them. Also, they used 3G wireless system for communication.

Nirav Desai, assistant professor at Amiraj College of Engineering, said the car used sensors for object detection, which helped prevent the car from hitting objects from either back or front.

The car can detect objects, obstacles with high range sensors and cameras. Sensors also control the brakes, clutch and accelerator whereas 3G wireless technology is used for communication.

According to the college authorities, they were working on using the innovation in other applications as well.

Priyank Patel, managing trustee at Amiraj College of Engineering, said the college had embarked on the concept of 'Science beyond engineering' through which students were required to do things that might be of use to society.

The 18 sensors, used in the car helped the professors to develop a dynamic model that also perceives environmental concerns. The car was on display at the Dextra Tech-fest at Amiraj College of Engineering and Technology on Wednesday.

According to Jani, the car could also be aptly described as a next generation robo fighter, which could also run on unmapped roads.
