Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, deputy premier and minister of interior of Saudi Arabia, has died ''outside the kingdom'', Saudi state television said today.

Nayef was appointed heir to Saudi King Abdullah in October 2011 after the death of his elder brother, Crown Prince Sultan.

Nayef, 78, had been abroad for treatment of an unknown medical problem and was in Geneva when death occurred, reports quoting the royal court said.

"With deep sorrow and grief... King Abdullah mourns his brother... Crown Prince Nayef who passed to the mercy of God on Saturday outside the kingdom," said a royal court statement carried by state television.

It said the burial would take place in Mecca on Sunday.

Unlike King Abdullah, Nayef was a conservative.

He was credited for building a formidable security infrastructure that crushed al Qaeda in the kingdom.
