A CBI court in Hyderabad has directed former Congress leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy to appear in court on 28 May in connection with the illegal assets case.

V Vijay Sai Reddy, the auditor of Jaganmohan's firms, had urged the court to defer the summons and other proceedings till the CBI completed its probe. But the judge ruled that the Kadapa MP and all the 12 accused should be present in the court on 28 May.

Reddy's lawyer argued that the CBI's act of filing charges before completing the investigation was illegal. ''The CBI should file only one report before the court,'' he argued. ''Further investigation can be made only if new facts emerge.''

However, the CBI counsel countered by saying that the agency is authorised to file any number of reports in a case.

Meanwhile, a city civil court in Hyderabad returned the CBI's applications seeking attachment of Jaganmohan's media companies – Sakshi newspaper and TV – and of two others in the Emaar case, as the agency had provided incomplete details.

The court asked the agency to file the missing information within a week. The CBI wants to attach assets worth about Rs1,100 crore. The city civil court can attach properties lying only within its jurisdiction, while the CBI has sought attachment of properties elsewhere in Andhra Pradesh as well.
