Reliance Communications' Head of wireless business Syed Safawi has quit the company after his contract ended, as India's second-largest mobile operator by subscribers is planning to restructure business to increase market competitiveness.

Safawi's contract ended in the normal course and it is not being renewed, RCom said in a statement.

RCom will merge all its geographical units under a restructuring plan and all geographical heads would report to Shamik Das, who joined the company late last year as joint president and chief operating officer, the statement said.

Safawi, who was the chief executive officer and president (wireless business), had joined RCom in 2010 from Bharti Airtel. As executive director with the New Delhi-based company, Safawi, handled all eastern circles and some of the western circles operations.

Prior to joining Bharti in 2007, Safawi was country manager and chief executive officer with Coca-Cola and was responsible for the softdrink major's operations in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

In May 2011, Reliance Infratel chief executive officer S P Shukla quit, being the third top executive to leave the Anil Ambani-group telecom companies. Reliance Infratel is RCom's passive infrastructure, or mobile tower, firm.
