Uttar Pradesh politician and Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh, arrested earlier this month in connection with the cash-for-votes scandal in 2008, was today granted interim bail till 19 September by a special court in Delhi on health grounds.

The 55-year-old former Samajwadi Party leader (later expelled by the party) was granted interim bail by special judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal after nine days in jail under judicial custody. He pleaded health problems even at the time of his arrest.

Singh, who has had a kidney transplant, was sent to All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi on Monday following complaints of vomiting and diarrhoea.

The court granted him bail on furnishing a personal bond of Rs2 lakh and a surety to the same amount. He also had to surrender his passport, preventing him from travelling abroad.

Singh is likely to remain at AIIMS for next few days. Doctors attending him have been ordered to report his day-to-day condition.

The bail order came after both Tihar Jail authorities and AIIMS submitted their reports on Singh's medical condition. The jail authorities said that Singh needed care in an institution with specialised medical care.
