Cash-for-votes: Amar Singh, others set to appear in court

Uttar Pradesh politician Amar Singh and five of his alleged co-conspirators are scheduled to appear before a Delhi court today in connection with the cash-for-votes scandal during the no-confidence motion against the UPA government in July 2008.
Former Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh and others are expected to seek anticipatory bail, which the Delhi police are likely to oppose.
Delhi Police, in their 80-page charge-sheet filed before special judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal on 25 August, have named Singh, BJP leader L K Advani's former close aide Sudheendra Kulkarni, former Amar Singh aide Sanjeev Saxena, two former BJP MPs Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahabir Singh Bhagora, and and Suhail Hindustani, alleged BJP activist, as accused in the case.
Saxena and Hindustani are already in Tihar Jail under judicial custody.
The police say 11 calls were made by Sanjeev Saxena to Singh on the eve of the no-confidence vote. It said that Saxena carried Rs1 crore on 21 July, the morning of the trust vote, to the house of BJP MP Ashok Argal and then made the calls to confirm the delivery of cash.
According to the chargesheet, the Maruti Gypsy used by Sanjeev Saxena to deliver the money was registered in the name of a company owned by Amar Singh.
