RK Singh to succeed GK Pillai as home secretary

The appointments committee of the cabinet has approved the appointment of Senior IAS officer Raj Kumar Singh, a 1975 batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre, as the new home secretary.

He will succeed union home secretary Gopal Krishna Pillai, who retires on 30 June.

Singh, who took charge as  as officer on special duty in the ministry of home affairs, will remain in that capacity till asssuming charge as the home secretary on 1 July.

An IAS officer of the 1975 batch, is from the Bihar cadre and has served at the centre as joint secretary in the home ministry .

Before joining MHA as OSD, he was secretary, department of defence production in the defence ministry.

A former home secretary of Bihar,  Singh will have a two-yeear stint.

Pillai, who assumed office as home secretary in June 2009,  oversaw the complete overhaul of the country's security establishment following the Mumbai terror attacks, is freom the Keralal cadre.
