A team of researchers in Europe and the United States has carried out a study and found that radiation from mobile phones adds to sleep disorder. It is one of the causes of reduced, and delayed sleep that leads to headaches.

The results of the study by the researchers from the Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University in Sweden, and from Wayne State University in Michigan have been published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

According to the researchers, using cell phones just before going to bed can cause people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep, and to spend less time in them. This interferes with the body's ability to repair damage suffered during the day.

Researchers say that the radiation may activate the brain's stress system, making people more alert and more focused, and decreasing their ability to fall asleep. They analysed 35 men and 36 women in the age group of 18-45 years, some of them were exposed to radiation that simulated the exact results as the radiation received when using mobile phones. Others were placed under similar circumstances but exposed to hardly any radiation. The results showed that people who received radiation took longer to enter the first of the deeper stages of sleep, and spent less time in the deepest one as compared to others.
