Jalva Media, a streaming media solutions company, has launched dekhofilm.com, a website which shows short films on demand made by independent film makers in India.

The first Indian website to showcase short films on the net, dekhofilm.com currently features 35 films from different categories such as fiction, animation, documentary and promotional, among others, profiling nearly eighteen film makers from Mumbai and one from Chennai. The site, which will also provide a personal profile of each of the filmmakers, can be accessed free by net surfers. The viewers will also be able to interview and interact with the filmmakers through reviews.

Speaking on the development Mr Shailendra Jit Singh, chief ececutive officer Jalva Media stated that the site is a showcase of the company’s technology capabilities. He believes that, with dekhofilm.com, the internet community across the globe can now view experimental films on computer screens on demand, anytime, anywhere. The films featured on the site do not require any down loading as they are video streamed on real and windows media platforms. Going forward, the company also intends streaming films made using semi professional equipment such as videos and VHS equipment.

To a question raised by domain-B on the revenue potential of the site, Mr. Singh said, "The site is primarily a show case of the kind of work we can do. It proves our technical capabilities. By itself we do not expect the site to earn much revenues though we feel that in the times ahead, once it develops enough popularity, there will be producers who would be interested in paying some money for putting their product on the site."

He said Jalwa Media was not really dependent on dekhofilm.com for revenues as its major activities were live webcasting, media streaming and indexing of audio and video content for other companies. For these services, he said, the company already had big names, like zeenext.com, satyamonline.com and tahalka.com, in its client list. According to him the company expects substantial revenues from these activities in future.

Industry observers feel that on one hand dekhofilm.com will provide a medium to independent filmmakers and parallel cinema to exhibit their work, on the other hand it will also give film lovers an opportunity to watch alternative and experimental films which are usually showcased only at film festivals.

Jalva Media also intends to make these films available in VHS and DVD quality streaming and on high-speed networks that are being built in the country.

One of the films available on the site is Makrand Deshpande's Candy Floss, which is a nostalgic look at the film maker’s own childhood in the city of Mumbai. Then there is a film, Timeless Warps by Fahad Samar, which is a picturesque documentary depicting the art of making dhurries. Hemant Chaturvedi's Clap Children is a warm hearted exploration of the life and times of street acrobats.

Jalva Media aims at becoming a global service provider of comprehensive convergence solutions and applications, exploiting and unleashing the potential of audio and video content on the internet, intranets and extranets.
