The Kama Sutra, the 2,000-year-old sex manual based on ancient Hindu philosophies, has got a 21st century makeover with a new app that allows couples to study its instructions in 3D.

The app, developed using state-of-the-art technology, transformed the manual's illustrations into 3D images when viewed through a smartphone or tablet.

Hazel Cushion, managing director of publisher Xcite Books said for over 2,000 years couples had turned to the Kama Sutra for advice and guidance.

The Kama Sutra, the Sanskrit work on human sexuality, was first translated into English in 1883.

The Kama Xcitra used state-of-the-art technology, with each image appearing to pop out of the page as a 3D hologram right in front of the reader's phone,  'The Guardian' newspaper quoted Cushion as saying.

Each image could be viewed from all angles, which meant users were offered a complete view of the guide's sexual diagrams, according to The Independent newspaper.

It took users through sexual positions such as the Catherine Wheel or the Prone Tiger, allowing amorous couples to view the position from a variety of angles.

According to Cushion, managing director of publisher Xcite Books, the Kama Xcitra used state-of-the-art technology to help couples explore interesting sexual positions whilst having fun in the process.

She added each image appeared to pop out of the page as a 3D hologram right in front of the reader's phone. The viewer then moved their mobile device around to appreciate the position from all angles.

She added, as a result, each position became clearer, finally solving the problem of where to put that awkward elbow.

The app also worked in conjunction with 69 poses and allowed users to customise the appearance of models, changing hair and skin colour also adding music as a soundtrack.
