India came in at the second spot after the US in the number of education queries on Google with IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad, the most searched in their respective categories, Google said today.

India was ranked 8th in 2008, and now trailed only the US, according to a study titled 'Students on the web' compiled by Google India.

The study combined Google search query patterns along with an offline research conducted by TNS Australia on behalf of Google India.

Among the education-related search queries on Google, over 40 per cent of queries pertained to higher education courses and institutes.

Education-related queries on Google in India grew 46 per cent year-on-year, which highlighted the importance of having a strong online presence, Google India vice president and managing director Rajan Anandan told reporters in Mumbai.

"Seven out of 10 students said they think it is essential for educational institutes to have a mobile site. But today, not many educational institutes have a presence on the mobile platform. This shows the areas that need working on," he said.
