With Indian government websites being easy targets for hackers, "about 112 government websites", including those of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Ministry of Finance, were hacked in the last three months, Sachin Pilot, minister of state for communications and IT informed the Lok Sabha yesterday.
Other government websites that were hacked included the Planning Commission and the HRD Ministry and those of the government of Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim and Manipur.
The website of telecom operator BSNL was hacked for the fourth time, the last being on 4 December by a Pakistani hacker group called 'H4tr!ck, said Pilot. But the minister did not reveal the origin of attacks on the other government websites.
Traditionally Indian government websites are targeted by Chinese and Pakistani hackers, including the website of the private office of the Dalai Lama.
But the frequent hacking of government websites has raised questions over the role played by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the organisation responsible for maintaining government servers.
The NIC maintains a stoic silence on the numerous reports of hacking.
