Jailed UK criminals harass victims via Facebook
31 Jan 2012
Violent criminals are making use of Facebook to taunt victims and their families from jail, it was revealed yesterday.
As many as around 350 people have been caught posting entries on Facebook while serving a sentence in the past two years according to the figures released by the ministry of justice. The profiles were closed by Facebook after prison officials investigatied the matter.
The sites could have been used by hundreds earlier with the authorities being unawares, it is said. Inmates are not allowed to access the internet though they can access the web on mobile phones smuggled into jails.
The revelation has come for criticism from campaigners yesterday, with Javed Khan of Victim Support, saying offenders using Facebook from prison made a mockery of the idea that they were undergoing punishment.
According to Jean Taylor, from Families Fighting for Justice, the perpetrators should not have been allowed access to mobile phones in prison.
She added the criminals were getting away with torturing their victims, and the social networking sites needed to ensure effective policing of their web sites.
