The content which came in the form of links, videos, and images started appearing on Monday. It includes doctored photographs of celebrities such as Justin Bieber in compromising positions, acts of violence and self-mutilation and even bestiality.
According to Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes who spoke to FoxNews.com the social networking site had recently experienced a rise in reports of attacks and it was investigating and addressing the issue. He added Facebook was always working to improve its systems to isolate and remove material that violated its terms.
He added protecting people who used Facebook from spam and malicious content was a top priority for the firm.
According to tech site ZDNet, the flood of inappropriate material seems to be linked with some spam virus that spread when unknowing users clicked on infected content.
Facebook users vent their anger against the site on Twitter and some even went to the extent of threatening to quit the social network once and for all.
