India could outrank the US as Facebook's No 1 market

According to popular social networking site Facebook India could become its No 1 market in terms of number of users, leaving behind the US.

The social networking site claims to have an active subscriber base of 800 million globally.

According to Facebook vice president (mobile and corporate development) Vaughan Smith the company was confident that in the coming years, India would be its leading market. He said currently it was No 3 in terms of the number of users and the last announced number was 30 million for India and 45 million for Indonesia.

He said he was sure India would be No 1 in the coming years.

Facebook is gaining popularity also among companies in sectors like FMCG, retail and hospitality to reach customers, promote products and gauge market perception through the social media platform.
 
According to Smith over half the users in India were believed to be accessing the website from their mobile devices.

According to the company website, over 350 million active users currently access Facebook through their mobile devices and more than 475 mobile operators globally work to deploy and promote Facebook mobile products.
