Greater bandwidth soon

New Delhi: We may soon witness a broadening and deepening of the Internet in India soon. According to Union telecom secretary Shyamal Ghosh, greater bandwidth will soon be available on demand in the country. This will be specially important for software and e-commerce players, which have had to suffer as a result of bandwidth availability and the resultant low data transfer speeds.
The increased bandwidth availability will come from the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd’s National Internet Backbone programme, under which it has laid 30,000 km of optic fibre across the country. This is in addition to the optic fibre networks created by private operators.
According to Ghosh, around 155 cities and towns enjoy 2.5 GB of bandwidth. And operators like Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited have enough international bandwidth. He expects competition to ensure that more players offer more bandwidth.
