Indian GSM operators add 1.24 mn users in July

Indian GSM operators added 1.24 million users in July 2015, a 0.17-per cent rise from the previous month, taking their total user base to 721.61 million subscribers.

However, the addition is much lower compared that of June, when the seven operators added 4.14 million users.

On the user addition front, the country's largest operator by revenue and subscribers Bharti Airtel topped with a net subscriber addition of 1.01 million users.

The New Delhi-based company's total subscriber base rose to 231.67 million as of July-end, while the company had a 32.10 per cent market share, according to data released by industry body Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI).

Idea Cellular came in second with a net addition of 679,796 users, taking its total subscriber base to 162.76 million.

The Aditya Birla group company, which ranks third, had a 22.55 per cent market share.

Vodafone India added 65,106 users during the reporting month, taking its total user base to 185.45 million.

Even though the Indian arm of British telecom major Vodafone Group was pushed to fifth position in terms of new user additions, on the overall customer base it ranked second with a 25.70 per cent (25.73 per cent in June) market share.

Aircel added 314,879 users, taking the total to 83.36 million. The company, in which Malaysia's Maxis Communications holds a majority stake, garnered a total market share of 11.55 per cent.

Videocon Telecom got 113,498 new users, taking its total subscriber base to 7.72 million, while it garnered a 1.07 per cent market share. State-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd won 22,427 users, taking its total to 3.48 million. MTNL's market share was steady at 0.48 per cent as of July-end.

Uninor lost 968,049 users, pulling down its total user base to 47.16 million. The company, a unit of Norway's Telenor, had a 6.54 per cent market share as of end of the month.
