GSM operators add 6.19 million users in May

India's GSM operators continued their subscriber addition run, with the nine operators adding 6.19 million users in May, a 0.85 per cent rise from the previous month. This increased the total user base to 733.09 million, with Bharti Airtel topped the net addition charts.

In comparison, the GSM operators had added a total of 4.97 million subscribers in April.

Bharti Airtel: The country's largest service operator by revenue and subscribers, garnered 1.66 million new users. The New Delhi-based company also had the maximum of 208.24 million users and a 28.41 per cent market share as of 31 May 2014, according to data released by industry body Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI).

Vodafone India: The second-largest operator in the country, added 982,381 users. The Mumbai-based company, the Indian unit of British telecom major Vodafone Group, had a 22.95-per cent market share and a total of 168.27 million users.

Uninor: Controlled by controlled by Norwegian telecoms firm Telenor, added 1.31 million users in May, taking its total user base to 37.88 million users and a 5.17 per cent market share. Uninor had the second-largest subscriber addition during the month.

Circle-wise, the maximum subscriber addition of 65.95 million came in from Uttar Pradesh (East)  

Loop Mobile: The largest operator in the Mumbai-circle, which has been acquired by Bharti Airtel, did not put out its figures. Neither did state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd provide its GSM figures.

Idea Cellular: The Aditya Birla group company garnered an 18.79 per cent market share and had a total of 137.72 million users.

Aircel added 942,210 users to take its total user base to 72 million, while Videocon added 127,256 users and state-run MTNL added 11,702 users. Videocon's total user base rose to 5.41 million, while that of MTNL rose to 3.27 million.
