The iPhone 5 is being launched in India today, after the iconic mobile handset was launched across Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Malta, Romania and Thailand.

In India, the unlocked iPhones are being distributed by Apple's partners Redington India and Ingram Micro at Rs45,500 (16 GB), Rs52,500 (32 GB) and Rs59,500 (64 GB). Ingram Micro is the distributor for large format retail (LFR) stores and Redington for other channels.

Redington is also readying for the launch, after it expects the stocks to come in by the first week of November. The iPhone 5 is already available in the grey market, but official sales are expected to start at 5.30 p.m. today.

''However, there is just a limited number of stocks and much of them are pre-booked. We are only getting 20 units, and this has already been booked by the customers,'' a retailer said.

Bharti Airtel and Aircel would be selling handsets locked on to their networks in the country, according to data posted on their websites. Both the operators had begun pre-launch sales three days ago.

iPhone 5 is coming at a time when traditional computer manufacturers such as Lenovo has forayed into the mobile handset market in the country.
