Father of Indian telecom scandals, Sukh Ram, has finally been convicted and sentenced to 5 years in jail, 15 years after he misused his office as telecom minister in the Narasimha Rao government in 1996.
A special CBI court in Delhi found that Sukh Ram misused his official position to award a Rs30-crore contract for supplying cables to a private telecom firm after receiving a kickback of Rs3 lakh.
Sukh Ram, who was in 2002 awarded a three-year jail term for causing a loss of Rs1.66 crore to the state exchequer in a separate case relating to equipment supply, has been on bail.
The CBI had recovered an amount of Rs3 lakh, which Sukhram had allegedly received in bribes in 1996 and the Rs1.16 crore he received from the Hyderabad firm, after raids on his residence.
He had allegedly received undue benefits from Rama Rao, managing director of Hyderabad-based Advance Radio Masts.
Investigations, later, (in 2009) also revealed that Sukh Ram possessed disproportionate assets worth Rs4.25 crore.
