Chinese firm among those interested in Odisha UMPP

Nine power producing companies, including the state-owned National Thermal Power Corp, the country's largest electricity producer, and Tata Power – the country's largest privately-owned producer – have submitted preliminary bids for the proposed 4,000 MW ultra mega power project (UMPP) in Odisha.
"Nine companies - NTPC, Tata Power, NHPC, Adani Power, JSW Energy, Jindal Power, Sterlite Infraventures, CLP India and Larsen & Toubro - have submitted their applications in response to the Request for Qualification (RFQ) for the project," the Power Finance Corporation said in a release.
It is interesting that the state-owned National Hydrothermal Power Corp (NHPC), which runs most of India's hydro power plants, has evinced interest in a carbon-fuel based project. It has teamed up with equipment manufacturer Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), another state-owned company, and Singareni Collieries.
Both NHPC and BHEL are currently running at a loss.
Monday was the last day for submission of request for qualification (RFQ) set by the Power Finance Corporation (PFC), the nodal agency for UMPPs, for the Rs25,200-crore project.
Another interesting applicant was the China Light & Power. There was also India's engineering major Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
