Safety, not money spent on Kudankulam nuclear project, our concern: SC

The Supreme Court today indicated that it might order halt to the ambitious Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) if it failed to meet safety norms, even as the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is pushing ahead with the loading of nuclear fuel at the first of the two units of the 2000 MW nuclear power plant.

Money spent by the government is not our concern, but safety is important, the Supreme Court observed as it heard a petition challenging environmental clearance for the Kudankulam nuclear power project.

The project was built at a cost of around Rs17,200 crore.

The apex court was hearing a petition by anti-nuclear power activist G Sundararajan seeking cancellation of the environmental clearance given to the project by the MoEF in 1989.

The apex court also directed any senior official of the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) to be present during the next hearing, scheduled for 4 October.

The petition alleges that the clearance for KNPP was granted without environment impact assessment (EIA) or any public hearings as mandated under law.
