GVK Power and Infrastructure Ltd has received the green signal for it's a$10 billion Alpha coal and rail project in Queensland, Australia.

Federal environment minister Tony Burke today granted approval for operationalising the Alpha coal mine and constructing a railway line between the mine and the port at Abbot Point, near Bowen, GVK said in a statement.

The environment clearance, however, is subject to GVK fulfilling 19 conditions to protect the environment

Analysts see the approval, which comes after the dropped $40 billion expansion plan by BHP Billiton, as a means of reviving the commodities boom that has been keeping the Australian alive and ticking.

Another Indian group, Adani Enterprises, is also planning a similar project in the untapped Galilee Basin in Queensland.

The Galilee Basin alongside the fragile Great Barrier Reef was a difficult place for mining and infrastructure projects because of the stiff opposition to excavations and dredging.
