NTPC’s first supercritical unit goes operational

Raipur: State-owned National Thermal Power Corp Ltd (NTPC), India's largest power producer, has commissioned its first supercritical technology-based unit at Sipat in Chhattisgarh, an official said Thursday.
''The 660 MW coal-fired unit was synchronized with grid 18 Feb at Sipat. It is the first supercritical technology based unit of the NTPC in India,'' the company official told reporters.
Sipat is based in Bilaspur district, some 125 km from state capital Raipur.
The total project capacity at Sipat will be 2,980 MW, with full commissioning of all its five units.
The NTPC already had two units, each of 500 MW, operational at Sipat since 2008. It added another unit of 660 MW on 18 February.
Two more units of 660 MW each will be made operational in the next 12-15 months.
