MTNL, BSNL allow unlimited free calls during night

State-run telecom operators Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL on Thursday announced an unlimited free local calling facility at night for its landline and broadband customers, to any network, effective Friday.

"MTNL has decided to introduce unlimited free local calling for its landline and broadband customers (combo) between 10 pm and 7 am to any network. The free unlimited calling facility is also available for Delhi MTNL landline customers to any network to Mumbai and vice versa during the same hours," it said in a statement.

In the case of BSNL, the scheme would be operational between 9pm and 7am and would cover all type of connections.

MTNL said the STD call charges have also been made local by with call charges at the rate at Rs180 sec / pulse.

"It will be implemented with effect from May 1, 2015. These are aimed at providing greater value proposition to its esteemed customer," MTNL said.

Of the country's wire-line telephone base of 26.7 million, MTNL accounted for over 3.5 million subscribers, including 1.14 million wired broadband service subscribers, according data released by telecom regulator Trai in February.

As per latest TRAI data, BSNL which dominates the landline market had over 16.6 million landlines at the end of February.

The two state-run telcos had between them 201.1 million of the total 26.7 million fixed line connections, or 77.3 per cent of the market.
