The Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) and the German Association of the Automotive Industry or the Verband Der Automobilindustrie (VDA) jointly organised the first ever Indo-German automotive meeting at the 9th Auto Expo today.

It was a rare business opportunity for the 60 German and 100 Indian automotive suppliers and manufacturers present at the conference to meet to boost the current €1.2-billion trade of both the countries.

"We are very impressed by the Indian production and engineering capabilities, and believe that with German technology we can achieve a win-win situation for markets in both the countries", said Achim Rauber, managing director of the VDA.

"Going by the rising figures of export car sales worth €25 million from India to Germany   and supply industry gaining €140 million in the first three quarters of the year 2007 it has proved to be a successful relationship specially with SIAM and ACMA", he added.

Sharing the automotive mission plan, Sanjay Labroo, President ACMA, "there are around 2.5 billion people working in the automotive sector in both the countries which can catapult to 145 billion by 2016 with strategic alliances in domestic markets and through exports".

There were in-depth discussions on research and innovation as the key to meet the growing demands of future commercial vehicle markets as well.

"We are focusing on the trucks, buses and commercial vehicles in India and are dedicated to develop not only an efficient but environment friendly product for our customers", said Franz-Xaver Polster, senior regional manager, MAN. He also stressed on catering to the mid priced market with affordable vehicles while carving a niche for their premium products at the same time.

Sighting the increasing competition in the Indian space there was also a concern expressed to meet the quality standard customized specially for the Indian roads. "Definitely there is a competition and lets be fair we are all good and Indian a vast market. Let the consumers decide for the future", said Rauber.

"We look forward to doubling the current 5 percent GDP share of Automotive industry in near future specially with our mission plan of profitable association with our German partners through VDA", said  a representative from SIAM.

The meeting was followed by one-to-one business meetings between various participants and was extended to a tour of city's automotive manufacturing and supplying unit. "The purpose is to show them the impressive functioning of the automotive plants here and help them understand it better", said Rauber.

Coming after a similar Indian Auto day by VDA at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2007, this meeting was a reciprocating gesture by ACMA. "The response was overwhelming from both the sides and a lot of communication has generated some positive interest. We hope for more future alliances specially the upcoming exhibition in Hannover", said Mr. Sanjay Labroo summing up start of a new Indo-German era.
