India’s forex earnings from tourists rise 17.8% in January to Rs16,097 cr

India's foreign exchange earnings from tourists arriving through country's airports stood at Rs16,097 crore in January 2017 compared to Rs13,669 crore in January 2016 and Rs12,100 crore in January 2015.

The growth rate in foreign exchange earnings in rupee terms during January 2017 over January 2016 was 17.8 per cent as compared to the growth of 13.0 per cent in January 2016 over January 2015, official data showed.

Forex earnings from tourism in dollar terms during January 2017 stood at $2.364 billion compared to $2.032 billion during January 2016 and $1.945 billion in January 2015.

The growth rate in foreign exchange earnings from tourism in dollar terms in January 2017 over January 2016 was 16.3 per cent compared to a growth of 4.5 per cent in January 2016 over January 2015.

Based on the credit data of travel head as available from balance of payments data of RBI for the previous year, ministry of tourism estimates the data of foreign exchange earnings through tourism, both in rupee and dollar terms, for the current month applying suitable inflation factor and current month foreign tourist arrivals data.
