Forex earnings from tourists up 8.1 per cent in November

Foreign exchange earnings from tourists arriving in India stood at $1.57 billion (Rs7,941 crore) in November 2011 against $1.45 billion (Rs6,516 crore) in November 2010 and $1.19 billion (Rs5,523 crore) in November 2009.

Foreign exchange earnings from tourists in dollar terms grew 8.1 and 22.2 per cent during November 2011 and November 2010, respectively, and by 21.9 per cent and 18.0 per cent, respectively, in rupee terms, during November 2011 and November 2010.

Foreign exchange earnings from tourism during January-November 2011 stood at $14.88 billion, with a growth of 17.7 per cent, as compared to $12.64 billion with a growth of 27.8 per cent during January-November 2010 over the corresponding period of 2009.

In rupee terms, income from foreign tourists rose 18.8 per cent to Rs68,721 crore during January-November 2011 from Rs57,850 crore during January-November 2010, which grew 20.7 per cent over the corresponding period of 2009.

Foreign tourist arrivals stood at 6.37 lakh in November 2011, up 4.7 per cent from 6.08 lakh during November 2010, and up 12.3 per cent from 5.41 lakh in November 2009.

Growth in tourist arrivals in November 2011, at 4.7 per cent, was lower than the 11 per cent growth reported in October 2011.

Tourist arrivals during January-November 2011 were up 9.4 per cent at 55.75 lakh compared to 50.96 lakh tourists landed in the country during the similar period of the previous year. Tourist arrivals had grown 11.9 per cent during January-November 2010 over the corresponding period of 2009.
