The government has got together all the textiles export promotion councils (EPCs) for organising mega textile shows in India and abroad in a bid to improve India's share of the global trade in textiles and clothing.

Indian textile exports have increased from $22.15 billion to $22.42 billion during the 11th Five Year Plan, Panabaaka Lakshmi, minister of state for textiles, informed the Lok Sabha.

The government, she stated, is also looking at enhanced participation in all major textiles and clothing fairs or exhibitions abroad to grab a bigger pie of the market.

India's share in textile exports dropped from 4.3 per cent in 2006 to 4.1 per cent in 2008 while in the clothing segment India's exports dipped from 3.3 per cent in 2006 to 3 per cent in 2008, as per the latest statistics of the World Trade Organisation.
