India’s steel output growth second only to China’s

India's steel production grew 33 per cent in the last five years, a growth rate that was second only to China among the top five producers.

China's production grew 39 per cent from 2008-2012, according to data released by the World Steel Association (WSA) today.

India's production grew constantly in the last five years from 57.8 million tonnes in 2008 to 63.5 million tonnes in 2009, 69 million tonnes in 2010, 73.6 million tonnes in 2011 and 76.7 million tonnes in 2012.

China, which produces nearly half of world's steel, had corresponding figures of 512.3 million tonnes, 577.1 million tonnes, 638.7 million tonnes, 694.8 million tonnes, and 716.5 million tonnes during these years.

Global steel production grew to 1,548 million tonnes in 2012, up from 1,341 million tonnes in 2008, recording a growth of 15 per cent.

Russia, which holds the fifth rank in the world order of steel production in 2012, clocked a mere three per cent growth in output during these five years.
