Up to 100 HMV stores in the UK will be axed with around 1,500 jobs set to go.

The news raised the prospect of the end of high street shopping and replacement by out of town malls as in the US.

Between 60 and 100 of HMV's 223 stores are likely be told this week about their closure once they sell their stocks.

The Sun newspaper reported citing sources close to HMV administrator Deloitte, that the company cut 190 jobs in the back office last week and  was looking at the best way forward for these stores.

The blow comes as sources claim fashion retailers Republic and Store Twenty-One too were in trouble.

The weeks around the New Year saw Comet and Jessops disappear even as Blockbuster collapsed into administration.
