Sainsbury’s posts record-breaking Christmas season sales

With a trading period which saw total sales (excluding fuel) up 3.3 per cent in the third quarter, supermarket chain Sainsbury's has revealed record-breaking Christmas festive season sales.

According to the retailer which comes in at the third position behind Tesco and Asda, Christmas was the 32nd consecutive quarter of like-for-like sales growth.

It said stores open over a year reported sales increasing 0.9 per cent (excluding fuel), in the 14 weeks to 5 January.

According to the retailer, it served a record number of customers over the festive period, with the week before 25 December its busiest ever.

Sales touched £16 milion in one hour alone, between 12 pm and 1pm on Sunday, 23 December.

 It said in total it rang up more than £100 milion in sales on Christmas Eve.
