Mineral production down 1.62 per cent in June

The index of production in the mining and minerals sector in the country fell 1.62 per cent in June 2010 compared to the preceding month even as mineral production grew 9.5 per cent year-on-year during the month.

The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic and minor minerals) in the country during June 2010 stood at Rs11,253 crore.

Of this, coal had the highest share of Rs3,793 crore (34 per cent) while iron ore came second with Rs3,176 crore, petroleum (crude) Rs1,637 crore, natural gas (utilised) Rs1,368 crore, lignite Rs372 crore and limestone Rs264 crore.

These six minerals together contributed about 94 per cent of the total value of mineral production in June 2010.

Volume-wise also coal remained at the top in June with production of 41.1 million tonnes while lignite production stood at 3.3 million tonnes, natural gas (utilised) 4,370 million cu m, petroleum (crude) 2.9 million tonnes, bauxite 9,66,000 tonnes, chromite 3,79,000 tonnes, copper concentrate 12,000 tonnes, gold 156 kg, iron ore 18.3 million tonnes, lead concentrate 12,000 tonnes, manganese ore 2,49,000 tonnes, zinc concentrate 1,14,000 tonnes, apatite and phosphorite 1,73,000 tonnes, dolomite 3,17,000 tonnes, limestone 20.4 million tonnes, magnesite 26,000 tonnes and diamond 5,646 carats.

During June 2010, production of diamond recorded an increase of 86.95 per cent while magnesite production grew 9.84 per cent. Production of zinc concentrate was up 9.14 per cent while lead concentrate production rose 6.52 per cent, copper concentrate rose 2.40 per cent, gold production grew 1.96 per cent, coal production rose 1.14 per cent and limestone production rose 1.12 per cent.

However, production of petroleum (crude) decreased 0.20 per cent while production of apatite and phosphorite fell 2.47 per cent. Production of natural gas (utilised) rose 2.52 per cent while dolomite (6.45 per cent), lignite (7.93 per cent), chromite (9.74 per cent), manganese ore (10.76 per cent), iron ore (11.89 per cent) and bauxite (17.60 per cent) all recorded production growth.
