Mineral production vaults 14.64 per cent y-o-y in January

Mineral production in the country, from the mining and quarrying sector, rose 14.64 per cent year-on-year in January 2010, compared with the level of

production in the corresponding month of the previous year.

Growth in mineral production in January 2010 was also 3.54 per cent higher compared with that of the preceding month, ie, December 2009.

The mineral sector also showed positive growth of 9.32 per cent during the current financial year beginning 1 April compared with that of the previous year.

The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic and minor minerals) in the country during January 2010 was Rs10,153 crore, a government

release said.

The contribution of coal was the highest at Rs4,063 crore (40 per cent), followed by iron ore (Rs1,901 crore), crude petroleum (Rs1,626 crore), natural

gas (Rs1,430 crore), lignite (Rs276 crore) and limestone (Rs255 crore).

These six minerals together contributed about 94 per cent of the total value of mineral production in the country in January 2010.
