Information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari said an inter-ministerial meeting would be held today to discuss issues of media ethics, after the conduct of sections of the media came under sharp attack in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Members from various parties expressed grave concern over the issue of 'paid news', which refers to propaganda being passed off as news in return for payment.

Tewari said though he shared the concerns of the members, it was felt after wide consultations that a self-regulating mechanism was best.

Tewari maintained that the government had to ensure that the freedom of speech guaranteed under Article 19 of the Constitution, with certain caveats.

He, however, added that the government was ready for a discussion in Parliament and could take a decision according to the "sense of the House".

The matter was raised during Question Hour, with members voicing anguish over some of the recent developments, including the episode involving two Zee News editors.
