The management of struggling Village Voice Media Holdings LLC (VVMH) is buying its chain of 13 alternative newspapers, including New York's famous alternative newspaper The Village Voice, for an undisclosed sum.

Founded in 1955 by Dan Wolf, Ed Fancher and Norman Mailer, the Village Voice introduced free-form, high-spirited and passionate journalism into the public domain.

As the nation's first and largest alternative newsweekly and the recipient of three Pulitzer prizes, the National Press Foundation Award and the George Polk Award, the Voice has published groundbreaking investigations of New York City politics, as well as reporting on local and national politics, and arts, culture, music, dance, film, and theatre reviews.

The paper's "Pazz & Jop" music poll, started in the early 1970s, continues to this day and remains a highly influential survey of the nation's music critics.

Voice Media Group claims readership of 94 million pages views each month and 3.14 million weekly print circulations.

Denver-based New holding company Voice Media Group today said that it has signed an agreement to acquire the publishing sales properties owned by VVMH.
